What a week!

Image
Well I managed to get through the rest of the week without any other scary things happening, but that doesn't mean it was uneventful.... but things are rarely uneventful when there's wedding involved. Not MY wedding of course, but one of the girls I stay (stayed) with in Taipei got married this past Saturday! It was a lovely day, and I got some nice pictures of the happy couple. (See below) But today's blog entry is about the night BEFORE the wedding! Here's what happened: One of the bridesmaids was staying at our house for the night since it was a morning wedding and hair appointments started at 6am. For some reason unknown to man she had gotten some dental work done earlier that day, and arrived at our house really late, and not a little uncomfortable. Our other roommate (also a bridesmaid) gave her some medication for the pain. The bride took a sleeping pill so she'd be fresh for the big day. I came home from doing my nails at another friend's house and go...

27 Dresses

Image
Last Thursday I went to see 27 dresses with about 10 other ladies. We all got dressed up, either in nice dresses, or in former bridesmaids dresses. We ate in the mall food court first, and then went to see the movie. It created quite a stir as we made our way through the mall. We got some “Hi Baby”s and stares. At the place where I order ed dinner, the chef came out of the kitchen and asked if I could take pictures with him. I posed for cell phone photos with the two chefs and one waitress. It was fun to be dressed up, but still wearing fun shoes and not spending time and money on the hair and makeup. Some of the girls wore their Crocs under their bridesmaid dresses! The movie itself was pretty good, though fairly predictable. The dress scenes were great though! I ’m thankful the ladies I’ve been fortunate to stand up with have good taste, and didn’t feel the need to make sure their bridesmaids looked awful! The most repeated line of the movie is “You can shorten it and wear it again...

Trip to Yuli

Image
Now that I'm in Taipei on Fridays, it's harder for me to get down to Yuli for a weekend. While only 3 hours from Yilan, it's more than 4.5 hours from Taipei... and with only 2 days to do it, it just hasn't been practical. But last weekend, I didn't have a choice! Why? Because my good friend Vivian (Suhan) got married! Vivian used to come to our adult English class when Hope and I were in Yuli. She also went to the same church. She took us on a memorable trip to Taidong, and taught us some aboriginal dance moves. When my parents came to Taiwan, she took time off and brought us to her hometown, which is in southern Taiwan. She's a really sweet and generous person. When I lived in Yuli, she was battling cancer. In fact, she had more than 10 surgeries. Through prayer and treatment, she is now cancer free. I was really excited to hear that she was getting married, though the wedding was the first time I "met" her husband, since they only started officially ...

Friday Night Live!

Image
I'm on my way to an English Bible study I teach at every week along with some other teachers. It's actually a really big event with over 300 students each week. It starts with a warm-up, music, and drama before being split into small classes for the second hour. I teach one of the small classes and a couple of weeks ago, I took part in the drama - even though my acting was a little rusty! It was our rendition of 'The Parable of the Lowest Seat at the Feast'. Hazel and I were two clueless ladies who sat at the head table because we thought we were VIP's! The "bride" and "groom" are outraged when we suggest that we can squish! "We don't mind" And finally, after we get kicked out, worrying about where we'll sit.... last words: I want my red envelope back! (Red envelopes are gifts of money given at weddings in Taiwan instead of actually buying gifts for a couple.) Thanks to Phil for the photos!
